SOMETIMES SATAN WINS
OR
A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE HAJJ
Islam is a pretty neat and offers something no other major religion does, travel opportunities. Every Muslim with the means to do so is obligated to travel to the holy temple at Mecca, Saudi Arabia at least once in their lifetime. It's actually a beautiful thing to watch. Well, to see on television as non-muslims are barred from entering the city,
This year the Holy Sermon of the Kingdom's top cleric was the most forthright denounciation of Islamist terrorism yet heard from a Saudi eligious official since 9/11. Things seemed to be going well. Maybe even better than usual. You see, Islam is no different than most major religions in that a good number of it's adherents are insane. One should remember that Islam is the youngest of the major world religions. It is approximately 1,300 years old. Young religions have goofy rituals. When Christianity was that age, it's rituals consisted on convertiing Europe's jews by killing them all. And always keep in mind that Catholics only realized that they wouldn't go to Hell for having a hot dog on Friday around 1970.
Within that context stoning Satan doesn't seem that unreasonable. Well, it wouldn't be if a bunch of people didn't get stomped to death every time it was done. If you, in your piety, threw some rocks or a shoe and 250 of your breathern were killed in the process, wouldn't that imply that Satan won?
I suppose the closest western parallel would be, if you went to a Good Friday mass and the cross fell off of the altar and killed 30 people or so. Or if Jesus came down and kicked you in the balls. Or something.
God, I'm really not funny when I'm this sick.
In other news, tomorrow is my first full day at my new job. The training on Friday was short, disasterous and covered nowhere near everything it should've. So while you go about your day during your comfy jobs tomorrow, please keep my torment in mind. And then throw a rock at Satan.
