Actually, when I heard that date, I knew that this story wasn't going anywhere for a good long time. The reason the GOP wanted Larry to get gone was because the headlines were shithammering the shameless bastards and they wanted more than anything to stop the bleeding. In sticking around - or, God help everybody, actually showing up in Washington - guarantees that our pal would keep Britney Spears off the front pages for just a little longer.
Oh, and you hear that there's an election coming?
Sen. Larry Craig is reconsidering his decision to resign after his arrest in a Minnesota airport sex sting and may still fight for his Senate seat, his spokesman said Tuesday evening.
"It's not such a foregone conclusion anymore, that the only thing he could do was resign," Sidney Smith, Craig's spokesman in Idaho's capital, told The Associated Press.
"We're still preparing as if Senator Craig will resign Sept. 30, but the outcome of the legal case in Minnesota and the ethics investigation will have an impact on whether we're able to stay in the fight - and stay in the Senate," Smith said.
A telephone call Craig received last week from Sen. Arlen Specter, R- Pa., urging him to consider fighting for his seat is affecting Craig's decision to reconsider his resignation, Smith said.
"It was a little more cut and dried a few days ago," Smith said. "There weren't many options. He was basically going to have to step aside. Now, there's a little more to it."
On Tuesday, Specter, senior Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, suggested Craig's GOP colleagues who pressured him last week to resign should re-examine the facts surrounding his arrest June 11.
"The more people take a look at the situation, there may well be second thoughts," said Specter, a former prosecutor. If Craig had not pleaded guilty in August to a reduced charge and instead demanded a trial, "I believe he would have been exonerated," Specter said.

Arlen, Arlen, Arlen. Does your hatred of the national Republican Party know no bounds? Are you
trying to make me fall in love with you? Because you know that I will. Larry's not the only one with a wide stance and a willingness to share.
The funny thing is that Specter isn't just being a giant pain in the GOP's ass, like he has been ever since the Bork hearings. He really does have a point,
a point that I made in my
previous musings on Craig's legal adventures. If he can actually have his guilty plea revoked, he could actually - dare I say it - get off.
Although, to be fair, Arlen also really likes pissing in the Republican's punch bowl. After decades of being the guy who farted at the prom, the party, including the president of the United States, went to bat for Specter when he was facing a stiff challenge in the Pennsylvania primary back in those halcyon days of 2004. In return, he became the first Republican to mention impeaching Bush for illegal wiretaps and called Alberto Gonzales a liar in public.
Is it any wonder I love him so? Seriously, I have his portrait macremaed on my underwear. And I try to never wear underwear.
So Larry's going to try to tough it out. Good thing he's so butch. He's going to be facing a
lot of opposition. The Senate Republican caucus has stopped viewing Craig as something they want to scrape off of their shoes and now see him as a mortal threat. A recurring, if tastefully dressed, cancer. And they're going to have their staffers and campaign hacks leak to the media until you
know just how outraged they are.A senior GOP Senate strategist said Republican leaders want him gone now and will press for him to keep his promise to resign. The strategist warned Craig is "losing any goodwill built up among his colleagues," adding, "He is simply a fish out of water, floundering right now to get his last gasp of political air."
If what the Republican Party has shown Larry over the last eight days is "goodwill," I'd hate to see those fuckers when they're downright pissy. If Congress wasn't still in recess, those jackals would have chased him out of Washington with lit torches.
"It simply defies reality," said a Senate GOP aide. "You can't make this up even if you are heavily medicated. The American people heard from Larry Craig that he would resign, and using the word 'intent' as a back door doesn't work with them."
I suspect that Larry Craig is something of an authority on "back doors." And I also resent some craven fucking GOP simp telling me what I can and can't make up when I'm heavily medicated.
It gets better. Now Team Larry is suggesting that the Senate Ethics Committee doesn't even have the right to investigate Toliet Time with Larry Craig.
Washington attorney Stanley Brand said Tuesday that the Senate Ethics Committee would receive a letter arguing that it should drop any plans to pursue an investigation into Craig's arrest in a men's room at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport."I don't think the Senate ought to be policing misdemeanor offenses that don't have anything to do with their office," Brand said. "They would be very busy."
Yeah, it isn't like they investigate the felonies Senators commit on a regular basis. I vaugely remember one actually drowning someone. But that quickly became, er, water under the bridge.
Mitch McConnell, who looks a lot like a stillborn baby would if stillborn babies were composed of nothing but ignorance and corruption, spent the day taking it in the nuts over l'affaire Larry.
Why, he was asked, did the GOP leadership seek an ethics investigation of Craig while giving a pass to Sen. David Vitter (R-La.) after he acknowledged in July that his phone number was among those on theclient list of an alleged prostitution ring?
"No charges have been made," McConnell said of Vitter. "And it appears whatever might have occurred, occurred before this individual came to the Senate, therefore raising serious questions as to whether the Senate has jurisdiction over it."The situation last week was, there was something admitted to; the legal case was, in effect, over," McConnell continued. "The only question was what the attitude was going to be in the Senate regarding the admission that was made. It is clearly distinguishable."
Actually, no it isn't "clearly distinuishable," you bloated fucking ghoul! Yes, Craig plead guilty, but Vitter held a press conference and spontaneously fucking confessed to soliciting whores. By the way, you arrogant blowhards in the United States Senate have jurisdiction over anything you say you do. That's how you got to spend six fucking years going over the Clinton's failed real-estate deals. I'll bet Mitch thought we all forgot about that one.

On day one of this stupid story the GOP bounced Larry Craig from
all of his committee seats. But when the F.B.Fucking.I raided Ted Stevens's house up there on Bribery Hill, was he even asked even nicely to step aside as the
fucking ranking member on the Appropriations Committee? No. No he wasn't. That cocksucker will be building bridges to nowhere for eternity and Larry got to sit in the corner for simply tapping his toes and hoping that his sense of rhythm would get his cock sucked?
People like Mitch McConnell and Trent Lott are proof that evil can actually exist as a physical force. Crass, stupid and malevolent are just three words that can be used to describe either of them. And they only cover their
pleasant qualities. It goes way, way downhill for there.
It took an attempted men's room reach-around for me to like Larry Craig, but only a cancer of a man like Mitch McConnell could make me love him. I sincerley hope that Larry not only refuses to resign, but that he also shows up on the Senate floor in an evening gown and tiara and gives a fourteen-hour-long speech listing every shitty thing that every sitting member of that chamber has said and done during their sick and savage tenures.
Maybe the only person in that august body who could list that litany of vice, corruption and stupidity is the only one there with nothing left to lose.
