"I AM NOT GAY AND NEVER HAVE BEEN. HOWEVER, I MAY HAVE BEEN A NASTY,BAD, NAUGHTY BOY ON OCCASION"

Politics is a horrible occupation for liars. It is a calling so renowned for its honesty and integrity that only the most rigidly honorable could survive for any length of time at all. It's just that simple, folks. Politicians are all just like George Washington, unable to tell a lie.

Furthermore, Republicans are twice as honest as everyone else in politics because they're the party of Lincoln and whatnot. Calling them liars is like calling Honest Abe a liar, which just doesn't happen .... y'know, north of the Mason/Dixon line.

That's why I believe that Idaho's senior senator, Larry Craig is not a homosexualist and isn't driven by an irresistable compulsion to get his knob polished in men's rooms nationwide. And if the Senator were to engage in wanton faggotry, you just know that he'd be a top. After all, he is an Idaho Republican and godfuckit, that's supposed to mean something.

On the other hand, I'm pretty famous for my boyish innocence. I look outside my window every morning and see a wonderful place full of adventure and promise. I bound out bed in my jammies, delighted that this might just be the day that I see a unicorn riding a rainbow. Just because it doesn't happen doesn't mean that it someday won't.

But this was supposed to be about Larry Craig and not me, wasn't it?

It turns out that most Republicans aren't like me. Despite their inherent honesty and integrity, they tend to be cynical and cold. And they don't believe a word Larry has to say about his wide stance in that Minneapolis men's room. John McCain has publicly demanded that Larry immediately resign his senate seat.

So has Norm Coleman, and Norm Coleman wasn't even a Republican until about 10 minutes before he was elected in 2002. Coleman's condemnation was sort of confusing to me, given that public displays of affection run in his family. You might ask yourself "Who is a guy who's dad once fucked a woman 43 years his junior outside a pizzeria to throw stones at another?" But the answer's pretty simple - someone intimidated by a guy with a wide stance, that's who!

Oh, and the Republican National Committee and Republican Senatorial Campaign Committee have been releasing increasingly snarky statements about our pal Larry. People who have the letter "R" after their names really want to see their reliable Larry ride off into the sunset.

Notable in this entire mess is the absence of Louisiana senator David Vitter. If the name sounds familiar, it's because it is. You see, earlier this summer Dave kinda confessed that he likes whores. A lot. This wasn't a spontaneous confession - his phone number was found in the call records of a madam currently under federal indictment. Yeah, oops.

It's funny how no one is asking Vitter his opinion on this matter. After all, he's probably more expert on the matter of embarrassing scandals than any sitting senator whose name isn't Kennedy.

But that would lead to asking some difficult questions. These would include "Hey, Dave confessed to committing a sexually based misdemeanor, why isn't he walking the plank?

To answer that, you just have to look at a calender. Vitter isn't up for re-election until 2010 - more than enough time for a tranquilized public to forget all about his hobbies. You also have to remember that Vitter represents Louisiana, a place that routinely elects felons. Joyously.

Then there's some nut-cutting politics involved. You see, Idaho has a Republican governor. Said governor would name a successor to Larry who would then run as an incumbent next year. As you might imagine, an incumbent Republican not named Larry Craig has some electoral advantages in Idaho.

On the other hand, Louisiana has a Democratic governor named Kathleen Blanco. While Blanco is so powerfully dumb that she might accidentally name a Republican to replace a "retiring" Vitter, a true professional should never count on such things.

If Larry goes now, the Senate stays 51-49. If Vitter went last month, it would have been 52-48. Here's some more fun with numbers for you. The Republicans will have to defend 22 seats next years and upwards of 10 of them might be vulnerable. Larry Craig could throw Idaho's seat into that column. You may not be aware of this, but the GOP has enough problems right now.

Let's not pretend that Republican moral values are offended by Larry. As was the case with Mark Foley, they were just fine with his off-the-clock fun until he got caught. Their outrage is selective and seems to be based solely on timing. It can't be because Larry's gay, because he says he's not and a Republican senator would never lie about something like that, right?

Like I said, Larry Craig says he's all man and I believe him. I'm a really trusting guy like that. But he sure makes some queer videos. Take this one from a long-ago time when Bill Clinton was about to stand trial before the United States Senate.

Christ, I feel like tongue-kissing another man just watching that! For the very first time ever, Tim Russert must have suffered uncontrollable douche-chills by the time Senator Craig got to the "nasty, bad, naughty boy" part.

So how do I reconcile that tape with my belief in Larry's declared love of poontang, you ask?

He's really, really secure in his masculinity. Aren't you?
