"DO I STILL GET TO BE SECRETARY OF STATE?"

Things are looking very, very bleak for one Samuel L. Berger. Mr. Berger, the Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs in the'second term of the Clinton administration, is under criminal investigation for hothanding some "highly classified" documents from the National Archives.

As is frequently the case, this has very bad consequences for John Kerry. You see, Berger is one of the 19,000 policy advisers to Kerry/Edwards '04.  If the president were to suddenly decide to resign so that he could sexually ravage young Mexican boys in the Texas wilderness and Senator Kerry actually became president, Sandy Berger is considered by smart Washington types to be one of the three contenders to become secretary of state. It is generally considered poor form for the secretary to have any foreign travel cleared by his parole officer.

But if there's one thing Democrats are really good at, it's creative excuses. Moments ago, Berger released a statement to the Associated Press that included his explanation.
"I deeply regret the sloppiness involved, but I had no intention of withholding documents from the commission, and to the contrary, to my knowledge, every document requested by the commission from the Clinton administration was produced,"

See? It was just sloppiness. People get sloppy sometimes. Besides, it's not like Berger was doing anything important, like reviewing highly secret documents in preperation of testimony before a comminssion investigating the murder of 3,000 innocent people, right? It's just...sloppiness.

Or not. Part of the AP's report demonstrates that something is a little more than sloppy there.
Berger and his lawyer said Monday night he knowingly removed handwritten notes he had taken from classified anti-terror documents he reviewed at the National Archives by sticking them in his jacket and pants. He also inadvertently took copies of actual classified documents in a leather portfolio, they said.
Opps. That's really sloppy. Although, it could lead to a comical moment where, say, Mrs. Berger could ask, "Sandy is that a PDB in your pants are you just happy to see me?"

Now that we all know that Kerry has an army of foreign policy advisers, including even some who are not facing the immediate threat of an indictment, one might ask what John Kerry's foreign policy would be. A good article on that can be found here.
